Dear Region 2 Members:

Happy New Year!! Hoping you all have a very happy and healthy 2008.

AMHA Election 2008

Most of you should have received your ballot for the 2008 AMHA election of directors by now. The ballot form provides very good instructions regarding the completion and submission of the ballot. It is very important that the ballot be returned to the Tabulating Agent by postal mail in the envelope provided by the Tabulating Agent and must be postmarked no later than February 1, 2008. Members may also cast their vote in person in the tabulation room at the Annual Meeting of Members from 9 AM until the time of the close of the election. Please be aware that to vote in person, you must provide a photo ID for identification purposes. No faxed ballots will be accepted.

Election of directors is an important function of the membership. AMHA no longer uses proxy voting, which means that the power to vote for a candidate rests with you and you alone. You cannot ask someone to carry your ballot to the election and you cannot assign your voting privilege to anyone else.

In our region, we are voting for one Director-at-Large to serve a 3-year term. Only one candidate, Harry Sebring - Incumbent, has applied for this position. A biographical sketch for Harry is available on the Members Only side of the AMHA web site (www.morganorse.com/members/inside_electiondal.php).

Even though there is only one candidate for this director position, it is extremely critical that you cast your vote. In the absence of a voting quorum, the election would have to be conducted again at great expense to the organization. So remember…it is your privilege to participate in these elections, and we urge you to exercise that privilege. If you have questions regarding the election process, please feel free to contact us anytime.

AMHA Youth Council
The American Morgan Horse Association's (AMHA) Youth Program underwent some fantastic changes in 2007. One of the biggest changes affects the youth-led governance of the program. The AMHA Youth Board has undergone a transformation and has received a new name more befitting its new structure. The AMHA Youth Program is now called the AMHA Youth Council.

The Council is made up of a President, Vice-President, Secretary, ten Regional Directors, and the newly added Regional Representatives. The Regional Representative position was created as a development program for youth who are interested in learning about leadership and governance. Additionally, the immediate past president will continue in an advisory role with the title Ex-Officio, formerly known as the Chairperson.

All positions are elected for a two-year term, with the exception of the Regional Representative positions, which will be filled for one year at a time.

Youth of ages 12 through 21 are invited to complete an application to join the council as a Regional Director or Representative. Regional Directors and all other Council members will be selected from the sitting Regional Representatives. Responsibilities of this new position will include meeting attendance, youth program knowledge, and promotion and assistance with youth activities and programs in their region.

Applications to become a member of the AMHA Youth Council as a Regional Representative are due to the AMHA office by August 1 of the current year. Selected youth will be notified by September 1 and will serve from January 1 through December 31 of the following year.
Currently, our region (Region 2: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and eastern Canada) has no Youth Council Regional Director or Regional Representatives. If you live in Region 2 and would like information on becoming a Regional Director or Regional Representative, please send an email request to amanda@morganhorse.com. There is also more information available about election procedures, job descriptions, and applications on the AMHA website www.morganhorse.com/benefits/kids_leadership.php. Programs for our youth are very important for the future of the Morgan horse…we hope many of you will apply for these positions.

Enjoy Your Morgan in Competition with Other Breeds

If you and your Morgan like to compete in open shows, competitive trail rides, endurance, carriage competitions, Dressage, or western working competitions, you can earn points toward a year-end award, a medallion, or even earn a prestigious sport horse award. The AMHA Open Competiton Program is getting bigger and better all the time.

There is a once-only lifetime fee of $40 per horse entered into the program, or you can enter for one year at $15. There is a terrific mutual benefit for the Morgan breed and for you and your horse when you join the AMHA Open Competition Program.

If Competition Isn't Your Thing...

The AMHA Pathways Program is a great way to receive recognition for your non-competitive hours in the saddle or in the carriage with your Morgan. Training/conditioning/pleasure trail hours can all be entered into your Pathways log. There is a once-only lifetime fee of $45 per horse. You will be surprised at how fast those hours add up to earn a badge.
