In Memory: Lois Schmelzer

Lois Elaine (Warren) Schmelzer, 83, of Hampton, New Hampshire, formerly of Sandwich, died October 11 at home. Ms. Schmelzer and her husband owned and operated several businesses on the Cape, including the Dan'l Webster Inn, Mill Creek Realty and Sandwich Construction.
Daughter of Heber S. Warren and Edith G. (Burton) Warren, she was born in Medford. She was raised in Medford and Billerica and graduated from Howe High in Billerica with the Class of 1953.
Shortly after graduation, she met and married Carl H. Schmelzer, who was in the US Air Force. After several moves for his career, they settled in Sandwich.
She and her husband bred Morgan horses and enjoyed attending horse shows all over the country.
The couple relocated to New Hampshire in 1973 and spent their summers on Prince Edward Island.
After raising her children, Ms. Schmelzer went to work at the New Hampshire State House, beginning as a committee assistant; then running for and winning election as the assistant senate clerk for the State of New Hampshire; and finally working as an assistant to two governors, Jeanne Shaheen and John Lynch, before retiring.
Ms. Schmelzer was always active with her church wherever she lived, including St. John's Episcopal Church in Sandwich.
She leaves four children, Laurie A. Zielinski of Hampton, New Hampshire, Carla J. Meyers and her husband, Daniel Meyers, of Dover, New Hampshire, Warren C. Schmelzer of Westminster, Colorado, and Raymond A. Schmelzer and his wife, Barbara Schmelzer, of Concord, New Hampshire.
She also leaves ten grandchildren, Jared Zielinski, Lauren Zielinski, Kurt Zielinski, Daniel Meyers, Matthew Meyers, Camryn Schmelzer, Sydney Schmelzer, Raymond Schmelzer, Kathryn Schmelzer and Krysten Schmelzer; two sisters, Joyce McLaughlin and Marjorie Johnston; and extended family.
She was predeceased by her husband; a daughter, Kathryn D. Schmelzer; and two sisters, Betty Robinson and Norma Carline.
Visitation will be Friday, October 26, from 5 to 7 PM at Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, New Hampshire.
Services will be Saturday, October 27, at 11 AM at Trinity Episcopal Church, 200 High Street, Hampton. A reception will follow.
Burial beside her husband at Fox Hill Cemetery in Billerica will be private.
