The stars aligned at the 2021 Superior Morgan Horse Sale in Shipshewana, Indiana on November 19-20 in the beautiful Michiana Event Center to give us a record-breaking event from start to finish.

With 240 sale horses and 120 stallions in our Superior Morgan Sweepstakes Service Auction on Friday night, over $4.4 million changed hands during the weekend and the smiles on the faces of the successful bidders told the story of a well organized, well supported sale with high quality Morgans of every age, size, level of training and potential.

Friday morning’s session kicked off the sale with the first-ever six-figure bid as the outstanding and talented three year old black stallion, HTLD Black Diamond (Merriehill Home Stretch GCH x Queen’s Angelica, by BKC Valiant Star) captured all the attention, capably presented by Amos Yoder Jr for Eldon Lambright of Bloomfield, IA. The hammer fell at $100,000 and helped bring the total sales for the 140 head sold in this session to over $1.65 million, with an average per horse of over $12,000. Selling immediately after this exciting young stallion was The Lady In Blue (Stonecroft Trilogy x JW Out Of The Blue, by HVK Bell Flaire), the 2020 3YO Park Harness World Champion, who is carrying a Superior Sweepstakes eligible foal sired by World Champion Dressed Up GCH. With a big of $65,000, the new owner not only gets a mare destined for breeding greatness, but also a golden ticket to compete for over $60,000 to the winner of our first Sweepstakes event in 2022.

The stallions took center stage on Friday evening with our second Superior Sweepstakes Stallion Auction, where all proceeds will be paid out to the top 20 foals placed in our 2023 event. A total of over $336,000 was raised from 120 services sold, creating a first place premium of over $92,000 to the top weanling in this resulting class. Most notable is that the 2021 Superior Sale audience was treated to in person performances by the 2021 Park Harness, Park Saddle, and Pleasure Driving World Champions.

Topping the stallion services was the 2021 Park Saddle World Champion Ledgefields Jagged Edge (Get Busy x Queen’s No Mercy), owned by Dr. Grace Steere and presented to an appreciative crowd by trainer David Rand. At $19,000, Dragonsmeade Axios (And The Beat Goes On x HVK Obsidian) enjoyed the second highest spot, while many time World Champion No Contest GCH (HVK Bell Flaire x Saralin Vogue) was the third highest selling service at $13,000. Right behind him was the only public service available in 2022 to World Champion sire Get Busy (Astronomicallee x So Vain), selling for $12,000, as well as being the sire of our top selling service. Tied for the fifth highest selling services were Merriehill After Hours GCH (Mizrahi x Merriehill Dusk To Dawn) and RWF Dralion (Dragonsmeade Axios x Patchwork Simply Amazing) at $10,000.

With another 140 head to sell on Saturday, and plenty of people anxious to raise a hand and possibly take home the next great discovery, the electric buzz through the entire facility was palpable. Just about 40 horses into the sale produced a heartstopping bid of $250,000 for CBMF Over The Moon (Astronomicallee x Halle Berry, by Stonecroft Byzantine), an 11 year old stallion with a well supported book year after year. If you’d have thought that would be the last 6-figure bid we witnessed at this sale, you’d be wrong! At $128,500, Dragonsmeade Quintessence (Mizrahi x HVK Obsidian, by HVK Bell Flaire), a 9 year old mare in foal to WC Dressed Up GCH was the example of what it would take to buy a full sibling to the late, great World Champion Dragonsmeade Icon.

Consider that these first two sales were exclusively breeding stock, then along came lot 248, an eye-popping bay four year old mare named KGA Spicy Dancer (listed as “pending 20” in the catalog), sired by World Champion Jake Ryan CH, and out of PPR Fashionista. This double granddaughter of the great show horse, Erotic Dancer, was consigned by Eldon Lambright of Bloomfield, IA, who also happened to consign the previous day’s high selling horse, HTLD Black Diamond. Again, Amos Yoder Jr enjoyed presenting this promising prospect to an appreciate crowd, who enthusiastically bid her up to $115,000. The fourth highest selling horse of the day was lot 245, the lovely Clayhill Catania (Hollywood Godfather x Decadence, by WWW Reality Check Dot Com), a 7YO mare confirmed to be carrying a stud colt sired by the one and only Mizrahi. At $87,500, this was a package deal that would be difficult to recreate at any price.

Saturday’s sales totaled just over $2.4 million, averaging nearly $18,000 per head, and bringing the two-day sale average to almost $17,800. The top 20 high selling horses brought an average of $66,175, shattering all previous sale records by a large margin.

The Superior Morgan Horse Sale management team wishes to thank each and every consignor, agent and bidder for making our 2021 event a high bar for the future. Please join us for the 2022 sale and our inaugural Superior Sweepstakes event on November 18-29, 2022 in Shipshewana!
