Attend the Vaquero Heritage Days

August 16, 2018

Journey back in time and celebrate California vaquero’s legacy at the Vaquero Heritage Days, which take place August 17-19 in San Juan Bautista, California. Hosted by Franciscan Friars at St. Francis Retreat Center on historic Rancho San Justo, this event takes place where early vaqueros lived and tended vast livestock herds in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. You can meet today’s vaquero-style gear makers, silversmiths, rawhide braiders, fine artists, and historians, who will all share their knowledge and skills.

The event also celebrates the Morgan horse in vaquero history! Jo Johnson will be on hand with her Morgan, JAF Sunrise Surfer Dude (pictured left), to demonstrate California’s traditional bridle horses, gear, riata roping, and you'll earn how these traditions and land stewardship remain in use today. And Ray Ordway, “Dean of Living Vaqueros," will have a special celebration on his 94th birthday!
