About the Broodmare Hall of Fame

The Broodmare Hall of Fame (BHOF) was originally a project of The Morgan Horse magazine. The magazine was approached by several breeders who advocated on behalf of initiating such a program in our breed as there is in others.   As traditionally fame and fortune belongs to the stallion, there is universal understanding of the importance of the dam line in the equation of genetics.  The TMH staff tabulated those crowned with a world champion title going back to 1973, then researched the dam line of each of those horses.  After two years of research, the results were introduced in the January/February 2019 Breeding Guide.  At the time of its publishing, the team had identified a remarkable 63 mares, with many of these soaring past the high standard of three World Champion offspring.  At the April 2019 meeting of the AMHA Board of Directors, it was voted that the BHOF would be an official program of AMHA, as well as The Morgan Horse magazine. The BHOF honors the significance of the mares’ contributions to Morgan breeding, puts objective information into the calculations of breeders and buyers, and recognizes and enlarges the prestige associated with the great producers of recent generations.

Important Facts About the BHOF

• Mares who have produced a minimum of three offspring that have won a World Championship in any division at the Grand National and World Championship Morgan Horse Show® will receive this designation. 

• Beginning with the 2020 show season, a World Championship in Equitation counts towards a dam’s eligibility for inclusion in the BHOF. Note: Titles won in the Equitation section are now entered into a horse’s permanent show record (previously those titles accrued to the rider only). To have past equitation results submitted towards BHOF status, complete the application form HERE.

• BHOF is designated on the permanent record of each inductee in the AMHA Registry database, and the designation of BHOF appears after the mare’s name on the pedigree information in AMHA’s print and online materials.

The Broodmare Hall of Fame Medallion

In 2023, AMHA began awarding even greater recognition of our broodmares by presenting a beautiful medallion, designed by Maretta Kennedy, to the current recorded owner of each mare inducted into the Broodmare Hall of Fame. This includes past and future inductees.  We are proud to honor these incredible Morgan mares, and those associated with them, who have contributed immeasurably to our breed, producing champion offspring time and time again.
