The hunter horse should appear calm, confident, and accomplished. He should have steady, even strides between fences and jump as if the jump is part of his stride. The pace should be even throughout the ride, being able to effectively adjust his leads as the course mandates. Cantering the entire course is preferable.
When showing in the Jumper division, the two most important things are getting over the fences without knocking down any rails and your time. Whereas the Hunter division is scored on the fluidity and smoothness more like a ballet competition, the Jumper division is scored on speed and accuracy more like a track and field event.
